• Implements collaborative initiatives with enterprise supply chain and supports facilities on global sustainability projects including carbon neutrality roadmaps

Work products or processes will always have oversight from engineer or field technologist.

Engineering Support

·       Provide hands on assistance in laboratory setting utilizing various hand tools and power tools

About This Opportunity

We are seeking an Energy Efficiency Project Engineer level I or II. The Project Engineer (PE) assesses client operations and identifies opportunities for maximizing energy efficiency and performance in industrial systems. Day-to-Day

You will join a team dedicated to helping industrial customers manage energy use by providing technical expertise through energy efficiency programs. Some of the day-to-day activities you would be involved with might include:

·        Perform project tracking, including M&V planning and baseline data analysis

·        Manages projects in a fast-paced consulting environment

·        Provide overall management, direction, and accountability on assigned projects to ensure progress and on-time, high-quality deliverables

What you will do

Under general direction, responsible for working independently with sales, and or client directly to develop, secure and manage new or expanded performance guarantees. Responsible for conducting Measurement & Verification workshops with clients. Responsible for managing M&V contract costs to ensure minimal cost variance and for creating and implementing solutions to reduce shortfall amounts.  Generally involved in medium size projects that include complex guarantees. Establishes M&V program to monitor and manage energy consumption, utility supply, and facilities operations and maintenance programs to ensure that savings are consistent with performance contract contractual obligations and client goals.  Pro-actively assists in taking necessary actions as required promote growth in the account, limit risk and ensure a high level of customer satisfaction. Pro-actively identifies new solutions sales opportunities.  Utilizes system, service and or GWS resources to assess and correct potential shortfalls.  Possesses knowledge of and responsible for promoting utility supply side service services, NISC bill payment Services, remote measurement and verification monitoring/ECM, performance indexing, LEED and other knowledge base offerings to the client.

How you will do it

• Develops and maintains positive customer relationship during the design phase of the opportunity development. Maintains this positive customer relationship during project build and throughout the duration of the performance guarantee.

• Owns and manages JCI tools & processes that ensure timely collection and accurate data entry of utility bills or other monitored consumption sources for portfolios up to $60M in active guarantees.  Initiates actions and develops positive customer relationships to support this activity. Ensures delivered M&V costs are within 3% of estimated amounts.

• As assigned, uses ability to communicate with technical and non-technical buyers, suppliers, and other JCI internal Partners (Systems & Service) to provide technical, process or financial support in the creation and maintenance of Medium sized, complex M&V solutions.  

• Ability to successfully work with client on-site staff to ensure operations and maintenance of assets/equipment are within contractual terms. Proactively reviews and/or interprets problems or patterns related to utility bills and energy consumption to limit risk and ensure a high level of customer satisfaction. As appropriate, solves issues and keeps performance engineering manager updated and involved when need for corrective action is identified.

• Monitors data gathering systems (remote measurement and verification monitoring/ECM, NISC web base tool, FPI, etc) to track energy consumption during the installation and guarantee/tracking phases. • Responsible for the creation and delivery of high quality / high value performance reports that convey added value and analysis of cost reduction to contract specifications and/or guarantees (Options A, B, C, D and Non-Measured Savings) to the client. Responsibilities include the

• structure and grammar of the reports.

• Actively participates in internal release or renewal meetings, customer kick-off meetings, and on-going account meetings including customer touch point visits. 

• On selected accounts, develops and leads the solution performance presentation to the customer.

• Owns and manages up-to-date archival records associated with Performance Contracting projects.

• Coordinates and audits the Guarantee Risk manager database.  Responsible for proactively generating internal risk management reporting as well as assist in monthly backlog reviews with regional management.

• Assists JCI performance engineering consultant in researching problems or opportunities that might cause performance slippage and or additional savings respectively. Monitors energy consumption and non-energy performance items. Gathers further information from on-site service providers and customer's maintenance staff. Initiates immediate corrective actions, which includes notifying the customer of any needed action on their behalf. Keeps Performance Engineering Manager updated and involved when need for corrective action is identified.

• Input's data, coordinate's data and audits the Guarantee Risk manager database.  Assists in the generation of internal risk management reporting as requested.

• Promotes and completes EPA Green Light/Energy Star, renewable solutions, LEED and other award programs administrative requirements per contractual requirements.

• Works to secure and maintain relevant professional certifications and licenses (e.g., Professional Engineering license). Responsible for remaining current with relevant engineering or design standards and practices.

• Responsible for the promotion and adherence of JCI safety policies.

Your role will be pivotal in WTD’s efforts to meet aggressive energy use reduction and renewable power production targets included in King County’s ambitious Strategic Climate Action Plan resulting in reduced energy costs and significantly lower greenhouse gas emissions.  
 
As an Energy Engineer, you will collaborate closely with Operations and Maintenance staff at WTD’s South Treatment Plant to identify and implement energy efficiency opportunities in all parts of the treatment process. You will also develop opportunities to increase the production and use of renewable power, including biogas and solar. Energy is an important component of WTD’s robust capital improvement program, and you will provide guidance and expertise as an energy subject matter expert to capital project teams.
 
WTD’s Energy Program has a track record of doing innovative and cutting-edge work. In 2022, WTD was recognized by a group of national water organizations as a Water Resources Utility of the Future Today for its innovative and forward- thinking advancements in organizational culture and energy efficiency. As part of this accomplished Program, you will have opportunities to develop and pilot innovative energy-related projects and processes that will be used as examples for other County agencies and external organizations.
 
About Resource Recovery
Resource Recovery is a business unit in WTD with programs that manage the delivery of products such as recycled water, Loop biosolids, and biogas, and provide energy and sustainability consultant services along with technology assessment services.  The work of these programs helps ensure clean water and maintain public health while contributing to the preservation of our natural environment.

Working Conditions
Work Location: South Treatment Plant – 1200 Monster Road S.W. Renton, WA. Teleworking one day per week is optional.

Work Schedule: This position is not covered under the provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and is not overtime eligible. This full-time position works a 40-hour work week, Monday through Friday.

Job Duties

Core Work Duties

• Work closely with South Treatment Plant staff to identify and implement energy efficiency measures
• Track and model South Treatment Plant’s energy use performance and progress
• Provide guidance and expertise as energy subject matter expert on capital project teams
• Lead plant energy team and facilitate ongoing engagement with O&M staff
• Apply for and secure utility energy efficiency incentive grants from local utilities

Experience, Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills

Minimum qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree in mechanical, chemical, industrial, or electrical engineering or related technical field
• Four years of energy engineering work
• Possession of an EIT certification
• Excel-based data analysis skills and ability to illustrate analysis in effective graphical format
• Skills in comprehending, analyzing, and interpreting technical information for targeted audiences Success working independently or as a productive and engaged member of a project team
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including ability to effectively interpret technical information for non-technical audiences simply, clearly, and concisely
• A valid State of Washington driver’s license will be required for travel to field locations where no public transportation services are availablle

Preferred qualifications (not required, but highly desired):

• A professional engineer’s license in the state of Washington
• Direct experience conducting energy audits of wastewater treatment plants
• Experience with normalized energy use calculations using multi-variable linear regression Experience with power monitoring systems and equipment
• Experience with strategic energy management practices and demonstrated successful implementation Experience working onsite at industrial facilities with operations and maintenance staff
• Experience applying for and securing energy efficiency financial incentives, including pre-and post-process data collection and analysis

As an Engineering Associate in our Sustainable Facilities team, you will play a critical role in evaluating facility energy performance, conducting energy assessments, and performing real estate portfolio analysis. Your expertise will contribute to identifying opportunities for energy savings, optimizing utility costs, and developing strategies for sustainable facility management. You will work closely with cross-functional teams and clients. 

Responsibilities:

• Conduct comprehensive energy assessments of facilities to identify areas for energy savings, including lighting, HVAC systems, and building automation systems.
• Perform detailed analysis of utility bills, energy consumption data, and key performance indicators to evaluate energy and utility cost performance across the real estate portfolio.
• Collaborate with stakeholders to gather data and conduct thorough real estate portfolio analysis, including energy benchmarks and carbon footprint analysis.
• Identify and recommend energy efficiency measures, renewable energy solutions, and other sustainable practices to improve energy and utility cost performance.
• Support the development of business cases, feasibility studies, and project proposals for energy efficiency upgrades and sustainability initiatives.
• Assist in the implementation and monitoring of energy efficiency measures and sustainability projects, tracking their impact on energy consumption and utility costs.
• Stay updated on industry trends, regulations, and emerging technologies related to sustainable facility management and energy efficiency.

• Support the preparation of reports, presentations, and documentation to communicate energy assessment findings, portfolio performance, and recommended actions to stakeholders.

Qualifications:

• Bachelor's or Master's degree in engineering, energy management, or a related field. Relevant certifications are a plus.
• 2+ years' proven experience in conducting energy assessments, analyzing utility costs, and/or performing real estate portfolio analysis.
• Strong knowledge of energy efficiency principles, sustainable building practices, and utility cost optimization strategies.
• Proficiency in energy analysis software, data visualization tools, and Microsoft Excel for data analysis and reporting.
• Familiarity with energy benchmarking frameworks (e.g., ENERGY STAR, LEED) and sustainability certifications.
• Understanding of building systems, including lighting, HVAC, controls, and renewable energy technologies.
